Why you need to have your fire risk assessment regularly reviewed

12 May 22

A fire risk assessment is necessary to create a fire safety policy in a non-domestic building.

It ensures that all risks are reviewed in order to protect the building and the people in it. An up to date fire risk assessment ensures that you have the best possible fire safety policy.

We’re going to examine the reasons why you should have your fire risk assessment reviewed on a regular basis.

Regular fire risk assessments

Here are just a few situations where you need to update your fire risk assessment regularly:

1. Something may have happened to invalidate your fire risk assessment

If you have experienced a workplace fire for example, your fire risk assessment may need to reviewed to check the validity. You will need to replace any equipment you used, such as extinguishers, and this will need to be considered in the assessment.

2. Change of circumstances

Refurbishments and moving premises count as a change of circumstances and should be reflected in your current fire risk assessment.

If you move, you will need to conduct a new risk assessment to identity the hazards in the new space and make sure that you have all of the equipment you need. When there has been a change in staff, you may need to review your assessment in order to alter fire safety training if necessary. Making sure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire is of the utmost importance.

3. Workplace changes

If there have been significant workplace changes to your building premises, such as layout alterations, it's likely that your fire risk assessment should be reviewed. In addition, if your workplace activities have changed, and your business now handles higher risk items than before, you'll need an updated risk assessment.

We advise that you review your fire risk assessment document on an annual basis to ensure that it is still relevant for your premises.
